Smyrna is a Cobb County city just northwest of Atlanta, in the inner ring of the metro’s suburbs. Its downtown sits about 16 miles from downtown Atlanta. Vinings lies to the east, Marietta to the north and west, and Mableton to the south.
Pioneers settled here in 1832. By the late 1830s a religious camp called Smyrna Camp Ground had become well known across Georgia, and the town took its name from the Bible city of Smyrna. The railroad arrived in 1842. The town went by names like Varner’s Station and Ruff’s Station before it became Smyrna in 1872.
Growth took off after Lockheed reopened the nearby bomber plant in 1951. The city had 2,005 people in 1950 and 19,157 by 1970. The 2020 census counted 55,663. Many Smyrna homes went up during the boom of the 1950s and 1960s. Those kitchens tend to be compact, with the sink under a window and short runs of counter.
